Australia - India Relationship in the First Decade of the Twenty-First Century

While the World War II was raging, Asia had already attracted Australia. After World War II ended, owing to the Cold war, the relationship between Australia and the region remained limited. Since the end of the Cold war with the importance of Asia, Australia has promoted its relations with the region, in an attempt to integrate into the most dynamic economies in the world. After the Cold War, India began to implement economic reform policy, and now has become the third largest economy in the region, the tenth largest one in the world, as well as a nuclear power. Besides economic reforms, India has adjusted its foreign policy, with its “East Oriented Policy” being one of the most significant with its military and economic might. India is being seen as a great counterweight to China, and Australia has regarded this country as a strategic ally in the twenty-first century.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, in face of a rising China, Australia has been stepping up relations with India, an emerging power in Asia. As for India, it shares Australia’s concern about China. So the relationship between the two countries has developed rapidly in various fields. The paper focuses analysis on India's place in Australia’s policy as well as the process of implementing this policy, which has contributed to bringing the relations between Australia and India to a strategic partnership.
