Coalitions in WTO: Current status and Prospects

For the past decades, as the globalization and trade liberalization have been strongly promoted at global economic forum in general and the WTO in particular, one has witnessed the tendency to group together among developing countries, and sometimes between developing countries and developed countries, designed to ensure the fairness, and equality in WTO’s decision-making process, improve the negotiation and bargaining capacities, and protect expected mutual interests at the multilateral forum. The formulation of these gatherings has made positive developments, greatly contributing to certain breakthroughs in direction of ensuring fairness, equality, and empowerment of developing countries in the WTO decision - making process. In that context, as a new WTO member, it is important for Viet Nam to understand these gatherings, especially those regarding those with whom we share mutual interests, so that Viet Nam can participate in and take advantages of these groups to better protect its interests at international trade forum, and overcome pressures imposed by other countries. This article examines recent developments of the coalitions in WTO, assessing their achievements as well as and shortcomings, and their prospects in near future.
