Resolving the dispute over Pedra Branca: Lessons learned for Viet Nam in the East Sea disputes

The sovereignty dispute over Pedra Branca (formerly referred to by Malaysia as Pulau Batu Puteh and now as Batu Puteh), Middle Rocks and South Ledge between Singapore and Malaysia had been ongoing for a long time and was only resolved with a judgment by the International Court of Justice on 23 May 2008. This article examines the background of the case and the dispute settlement process, analyzes the judgment of the International Court of Justice, reviews the efforts of the parties to implement the judgment, and finally offers some suggestions for Viet Nam to approach in the East Sea (the South China Sea) disputes.
