ASEAN political – security community after 2015 and the participation of Viet Nam

Since the end of the Cold War, the Asia-Pacific has been in its transition to a new regional order which has not taken shape yet. The coming into being of the ASEAN Community in 2015 promises to add one more feature onto the unfinished regional political and security panorama. Whether the new feature will change the contour of the regional strategic landscape, brighten or darken it, be a focal or a marginal feature of the whole structure, depends largely on the prospect of the ASEAN Community itself. So important as the role ASEAN has been playing in regional cooperation and integration in East Asia and the Asia-Pacific, the future of the ASEAN Community is bound to have significant implications for not only member states but also major powers and the dynamism of international relations in the region.

On the basis of reviewing the ASEAN community building process in the political and security arenas up to 2015, this article aims at identifying and analyzing the defining elements of the Post-2015 Vision for ASEAN and the determining factors of the future of the ASEAN Political - Security Community. It will, thereby, provide some food-for-thought on the prospects of the ASEAN Political - Security Community after 2015 and Viet Nam’s participation in that community.
