Selected features of acculturation in oversea Vietnamese community

Due to economic and political changes throughout the 20th century, by 2012, there have been about 4 million overseas Vietnamese mainly living in 21 countries in North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia and Oceania. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam, the overseas Vietnamese have a significant potential, especially economic and knowledge ones, to contribute to the national construction and development of the country nowadays. One of the most effective bridges to link overseas Vietnamese with the country is culture. Most overseas Vietnamese love and are linked closely to the traditional culture values, but when living abroad, they have also been exposed and acquired the cultural values of the home country. It is a process called acculturation.

Acculturation is defined as "the process of interaction between the groups of people who come from different cultures, thus lead to cultural changes (behavior, communication, thinking) in each group "(UNESCO 1978). Several researches have showed that, the longer a person lives abroad, the less they will be influenced by their origin country’s cultural values. However, countries such as South Korea, China, etc., have been successful in creating cultural links with the overseas community to encourage them to contribute to their home countries. Through field surveys, the author provides some initial implications about acculturation of the Vietnamese community in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Eastern Europe, and suggests a number of solutions to guide the acculturation of the overseas community to strengthen their ties with Viet Nam.
