China and Viet Nam in the wake of the South China Sea (East Sea) incident

At the beginning of May 2014, hundreds of China's large vessels, including military ships and supporting aircraft, escorted the massive oil rig Haiyang Shiyou 981 (better known as HD-981) into and in direct violation of Viet Nam's Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf. This is an unilateral act in defiance of international laws and the United Nations Convention on the Laws of the Seas as well as rules set in the Declaration of Conduct to which China is a signatory, causing a sudden escalation in the regional situation, threatening the maritime safety and security thereof. This article examines and analyses the reaction of the world in the wake of China's act. This article also examines Viet Nam's reasonable behaviour, which has been widely supported by the international community.
