Legal issues related to verdict of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) on the settlement of maritime disputes: the lawsuit of the Phillipines vs. China

Situated at a strategic location and possessing immense potential, the East Sea is the center of national disputes. The introduction of the 1982 UNCLOS has helped accelerate effective and fair settlement of disputes among maritime nations. One of the key progresses of the Convention is the recognition of settlement by arbitration specified in Appendix VII. The Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) is a priority favoured by nations for settlement of maritime disputes according to Appendix VII. This article seeks to present legal bases and issues pertaining to the mechanism governing the settlement of maritime disputes at the Permanent Court of Arbitration, with emphasis placed on the lawsuit of the Philippines vs. China.
