The Posibility of A Fishing Management Organisation in the East Sea

Cooperation in managing and protecting aquaculture resources, especially schools of fish, is an important obligation of the parties to UNCLOS 1982. Thereby, parties can either directly or via regional organisations negotiate necessary measures to ensure the preservation and development of fisheries. Regional fisheries management associations are one of the effective ways to fulfill the obligation. At present, there are about 38 Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) with the management scope covering almost all seas and oceans of the world. Nevertheless, the East Sea is not yet governed by any RFMO while fisheries here are being depleted due to excessive exploitation and fishing. This sea is also an area with many overlapping marine claims, hindering the exercise of fishing rights of fishermen in the national and international seas. To address this issue, the launch of an organisation that can administer fishing in the East Sea can be considered as a necessary and conducive solution.
