Nuclear issues and relations on the Korean Peninsula: Current status and perspective

In the echoes of the decision made by Cuba and the United States to restore full bilateral diplomatic relations on 17/12/2014 and the signing of the agreement between Iran and the P5+1 about Tehran’s nuclear program on 14/7/2015, the international community appears to pay greater attention to the nuclear issue and North - South relations on the Korean peninsula in a controversial debate about whether the North Korean nuclear profile would be a next step after Iran, thereby raising the possibility of reunifying the two Koreas and wiping out the last legacies of the Cold War.

In an attempt to find the answer, this article aims to provide an insightful perception on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and the inter-Korean relations by approaching them through various angles in the overall dynamics of the region and the world during the past decades since the peninsula was divided. On the basis of analyzing the factors impacting and influencing the reunification of the two Koreas and engaging the nuclear issue in the interaction among these factors, the article explains why inter-Korean relations have always been in a state of flux and instability for many years and assesses the prospects of resolving the Korean nuclear issue and reunification in the years to come.
