The Issue of the East Sea in the US policy on the Asia-Pacific after the Cold War

Occupying important sea routes, the East Sea plays a remarkable role in security and trade of the US. The US concern in the East Sea is basically “free trading in important sea routes, preventing any country from occupying regional seas”. Since a number of islands and archipelagos can serve as a platform for monitoring and controlling sea fleets, the US is increasingly concerned in the East Sea and thus, has been augmenting its presence here. The issue of the East Sea is one of the important contents in the US policy towards the Asia-Pacific after the Cold War. This article focuses on the importance of the East Sea issue in the US policy towards the Asia-Pacific after the Cold War, elaborates the US views on this issue demonstrated by the shift from “non-engagement” over “limited engagement” to “active engagement” in all the East Sea-related developments and produces several comments on the US views on the East Sea after the Cold War.
