International Studies - THE EAST SEA ISSUES
The Gulf of Thailand is a continental shelf sea with a thick layer (up to many kilometers) of sediments since the Tertiary period. The general circulation in the Gulf of Thailand is mainly driven by tide, wind, water density differences, and induction by the general circulation in the East Sea/the South China Sea (in Viet Nam, the South China Sea is referred to East Sea). In more recent publications, the Gulf of Thailand is considered part of the East Sea.
This paper provides a review of the current status of regional cooperation to protect the marine environment in the Gulf of Thailand against pollution in order to suggest ways to improve it. To achieve this objective, this paper first explores the existing pollution threats to its marine environment (1), then reviews the current status in regional efforts to protect the marine environment of the Gulf against transboundary pollution (2). Finally, it suggests some ideas to improve the regional cooperation in this matter (3).
