Solutions to reinforce the ASEAN’s centrality in East Asia regional cooperation in the context of the TPP Agreement

ASEAN has initiated and actively promote cooperation in East Asia. In addition, it is playing the central role in regional cooperation. However, the current regional cooperation in East Asia is relatively complicated, with diverse and even overlapping cooperation mechanisms, without strong cooperation regulations; Moreover, great powers’ rivalry for regional leadership as well as the poor leadership of ASEAN have caused difficulties for ASEAN in its leading role, gradually weakening ASEAN’s centrality. The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) appears as a new factor challenging the ASEAN’s centrality. This article proposes some solutions as to how ASEAN and East Asian countries should do to maintain and strengthen ASEAN's centrality in regional cooperation in the new situation.
