On the 28th August 1945, the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam was established. On the same day, the Ministry – under the guidance of President Ho Chi Minh, the first Minister for Foreign Affairs – immediately began undertaking its historical mission on the foreign front in the backdrop of international politics dominated by major powers. However, according to the invariable direction and principle of “independence and self-reliance” Viet Nam’s diplomacy has attained many great achievements, making a vital contribution to the resounding victory of the country's struggle for independence in the past as well as in the national construction and defence today. This paper provides a study of the philosophy of independence and self-reliance in President Ho Chi Minh's foreign relations activities and suggests four major lessons in maintaining this principle of independence and self-reliance in our country's diplomatic activities today.
