Prospects for US-ASEAN cooperation: From 2016 look back and forward

By initiatively hosting the Sunnylands Summit, in February 2016, President Obama’s administration wants to emphasize the importance of Southeast Asia to the US. Major factors account for the increasing attention of the US to ASEAN countries. As for them, ASEAN countries have also gained many benefits at the meeting. At the Summit, ASEAN leaders and the US established the principles and itinerary for cooperation and mutual development between the US and ASEAN toward 2020 and beyond. There is room for improving the US-ASEAN relations during the past years and the years to come. However, challenges remain so both sides, the US and ASEAN, need to commit themselves to the partnership and create a positive setting for more intensive US-ASEAN dialogues.
