The Transitional Security Architecture in the Asia-Pacific and Ways Forward

Currently, there are many ways of defining emerging security architectures in the Asia-Pacific region. In broader sense, the regional security architecture includes both systems of multilateral institutions set up and run by ASEAN and those security arrangements between the United States and its allies in the region. But in its narrowest sense and from regional perspective, the regional security architecture is defined as a system of multilateral institutions in security field in the Asia-Pacific region, which are led by ASEAN and not including bilateral security arrangements between the US and its allies. In recent years, the regional security architecture in Asia Pacific region has been undergoing important changes. With many new issues and challenges, countries in and outside the region have to make deliberate calculations in the process of formulating policies for their own and regional security. This paper will focus on main institutions of ASEAN, which are considered as constituting the regional security architecture, exploring the tools and role of ASEAN in the security architecture, new issues and challenges emerging recently and suggesting some ways forwards from a regional perspective.
